Materials firm Selenis is supporting the Business Call for a UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution.The Business Call is a report co-authored by the World Wildlife Fund, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Boston Consulting Group. In a news release, officials with Portugal-based Selenis said that the call outlines why a global treaty is needed to help stop 11 million metric tons of plastic flowing into the ocean each year.They added that Selenis operates in different areas to decrease plastic pollution, developing products with high recycled content and recyclability, as well as promoting recycling and circularity through different associations they are part of, including the Association of Plastics Recyclers. The firm is currently focusing innovation on developing solutions that are fully recyclable in the PET stream. Selenis also is in the final development stage of WEEZEN CE-brand resins, which will supply the heat-shrink sleeves market with a solution that can be recycled together with the standard PET stream classified as 1 in terms of recyclability.Officials added that Selenis contributes to solving the world’s problem of plastic waste, by taking what would otherwise be discarded and turning it into the building-blocks of their products for applications such as packaging, cosmetics, personal care and durable goods.Earlier this year, Selenis reached full production on glycol-modified PET (PETG) resins with recycled content. Selenis began limited production of recycled-content resins at its plants in Portugal and Italy in late 2019. Those materials — under the ECO Series — can have up to 50 percent recycled content. Selenis is owned by investment firm IMG Group of Portalegre, Portugal. IMG also owns global polyester film producer Evertis and is a 50-50 partner with Alpek Group of Mexico in a PET bottle resin plant in Montreal.
